Program note

Kleine Welt (Hungarian: Mikrokozmosz) consists of 16 progressive chamber pieces in one volume written and published in 2023. The individual pieces progress from easy and simple beginner études to difficult advanced technical displays, and could be used in modern chamber ensemble lessons and educations. When Bela Bartók composed his piano pieces (in six volumes 1926-1939), he indicated that the last two volumes were intended as professionally performable concert pieces and that they could be played in different arrangements. As the original pieces are notable for their display of folk music influence, in their unusual tonality and additive rhythms, Thorsson decided to add – somewhat modified – transcriptions of nordic folk songs and dances in an arrangement for a idiomatic quintet.
